EXHIBITION RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. Competition is open to any member of a Horticultural Society.
2. The ST. JAMES HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY membership
fee is $15 annually.
3. All exhibitors must be in possession of a current membership card
of a Horticultural Society.
4. There will be an entry fee of $0.50 for all exhibitors except in
Junior Classes where no entry fee is required.
5. All questions with regards to exhibits or awards may be referred
to the Show Co-chairs.
6. All exhibits must be placed on the evening prior to the Exhibition
and must remain until 9:00 p.m. on the last day of the Exhibition.
7. PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN TO NAMED VARIETIES.
8. All flower and vegetable exhibits must be grown by Exhibitor.
Houseplant exhibits must be in possession of the Exhibitor at
least 6 weeks prior to the show.
9. ALL "BAKING & CANNING" and "SEWING & CRAFTS"
MUST BE THE WORK OF THE EXHIBITOR AND MUST
HAVE BEEN COMPLETED DURING THE CURRENT
YEAR.
10. Cut flowers must be shown in containers supplied by the
Exhibitor. Attached foliage of plants exhibited may be used as
filling. If foliage is separate from flower stem judge will count
number of stems. When Exhibitor is using their own container
their name should be marked on the bottom.
11. Filling is allowed in baskets but filling and flowers must be grown
by Exhibitors.
12. Baskets may be made of any material with handle over basket
permanently attached. They will be judged from one side only.
13. Exhibitors may place as many entries as they wish in any class
however each exhibitor may win only one prize in any one section.
An honourable mention may be awarded in lieu.
14. The first or any other ribbon may not be awarded or withheld
entirely in any section where the judges consider the exhibits too
few in number or not of sufficient merit to justify the full award
being made.
Any exhibit may be removed at the discretion of the Show
Committee.
We reserve the right to alter Classes when conditions warrant.
15. Any competitor may appeal the decision of the Judges by lodging
a written complaint with the Secretary, together with a protest
fee of $5.00 which will be forfeited in cases where the appeal is
not sustained. All appeals must be made on the day of the judging.
16. Although the Society will give the best possible care to all
exhibits. NO RESPONSIBILITY IS ASSUMED IN THE
EVENT OF THEFT, DAMAGE OR LOSS.
17. Highest Aggregate is based on the following calculation:
1st Place = 8 points – 2nd Place = 5 points –3rd Place = 3 points
To win a High Aggregate entrant must have won at least 2 ribbons.
18. TROPHIES and ROSETTES will be awarded to GRAND
CHAMPIONS only.
19. No exhibitors, except designated judges' helpers, are allowed in
the Show Hall while judging is taking place!
REGULATIONS FOR EXHIBITING
FRUITS & VEGETABLES
1. Fruit and cleaned vegetables should be uniform in size and shape
and the exact number specified should be shown.
2. Cut tops off beets, parsnips and carrots to within one half to one
inch. Leave main root intact.
3. Trim onion tops to one half inch. Remove roots. Do not peel the
skin off the onions.
4. The stems should be left on peas, beans, cukes, tomatoes,
peppers, apples, crabapples, strawberries and plums. Raspberries
to be shown without stems.
5. Leave bottom and a fan of 3 inches on top leaves of rhubarb.
6. Leeks should contain the stem and a fan of 4 to 5 inches of top
leaves and roots trimmed to 1/2 inch.
7. Corn on the cob should have 1/3 of husks removed from tip to
butt.
8. Celery, swiss chard and kale to be displayed in a glass container
of water.
RULES FOR FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS
1. Only fresh cut flowers grown by the exhibitor are to be used
unless otherwise specified.
2. All arrangements are to be one-sided unless otherwise specified.
3. A NOVICE is an exhibitor who has never won 1st prize for a
CLASS XIV arrangement from the St. James Horticultural
Society or any Manitoba Horticultural Association member
societies.
4. Support material such as frogs, foam, oasis, vermiculite, wiring or
tying may be used but not visible.
5. No dyes or sprays may be used on fresh plant material.
6. Accessories such as statues, figurines, candles, exotic fruits,
unusual or wild plant material not grown by the exhibitor but
complementing or giving interest to an arrangement may be
included.
PRINT COMPETITION REGULATIONS
1. No individual may enter more then one entry in each section.
2. Professional photographers are not eligible to enter this contest.
A professional is one that earns $1,000. or more per year from
photography.
3. Prints that have been entered in previous St. James Horticultural
Society Competitions are not eligible.
4. The St. James Horticultural Society cannot assume responsibility
or damage to or loss of any print.
5. Print entries only – prints to be no larger then 4" x 6". Prints
must be displayed in clear, acrylic standup holders. Interest must
focus on horticulture or natural material.
All prints to be taken of subjects in Manitoba unless otherwise
indicated.
6. Digital entries for projection only. Images sized not larger then
8" x 10".
7. ALL ENTRIES SHOULD BE TITLED. Where possible the
name of the cultivar or species of the principal subject should be
shown.
8. JUDGES DECISION WILL BE FINAL.
